What is Dalcroze Eurhythmics
and Introduction to Piano?

Dalcroze Eurhythmics is a philosophy of music education based on the ideas and teaching of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865-1950), a revolutionary Swiss musician and educator (Geneva Conservatory).

He believed that engaging in movement to music results in a more thorough understanding of musical ideas and better musicianship. In addition, he stressed the importance of improvisation and systematic ear training in musical development.

In a Dalcroze Eurhythmics class, the joy of moving the body fosters the learning of musical concepts such as beat, dynamics, durations, melodic direction, meter, form, and phrasing. Ear training and improvisation are always incorporated.

In a Introduction to Piano class, the student learns the layout of the keyboard, musical alphabet and simple five finger songs. Musical notation is introduced and improvisation is emphasized.

Games and activities are designed to allow the students to experience the musical concept in various ways and to make their own discoveries about it. Specific ear training games allow the students to develop their 'inner hearing' as well as their singing voices.

In addition, Dalcroze Eurhythmics classes always incorporate improvisation, thus allowing the students to use their newfound knowledge and skills in creative ways. This improvisation may involve words, gestures, partner work, playing instruments, or moving the whole body.
